A cottonwood tree leans out towards the sunlight in a deep canyon of redrock and sand. A faint beam of light strikes the canyon floor.

Native Alcove

Escalante Canyons, Utah

This is a view that probably has not changed much for the past 500 years. No double cottonwood trees have come and gone, but the petroglyphs behind me indicate that this area has been used by humans for many centuries as a sanctuary in the desert. Photo © copyright by Nathan St. Andre.
